Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to depart France on Monday for Cape Town, South Africa, to co-chair the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s spokesperson, confirmed that the presidential session is scheduled for Tuesday, December 3, 2024, following a ministerial meeting on December 2 at the South African Parliament Building in Cape Town.
The meeting will address a wide range of bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest, according to Onanuga. It will also review progress made since the 10th session of the BNC, which was held in Abuja from November 29 to December 1, 2021.
“This session builds on commitments established during their June 2024 meeting in Johannesburg, following President Ramaphosa’s inauguration for a second term,” Onanuga said.
The 11th BNC session will feature discussions across eight working groups, focusing on areas such as political consultations, consular and migration issues, banking and finance, defence and security, manufacturing, social sector development, mining and energy, and trade and investments.
Officials from both nations are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements during the talks.
The Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission was established in 1999 to strengthen diplomatic and cooperative ties between the two countries. The first session at the Heads of State level was held in Pretoria in October 2019.
This high-level platform continues to promote collaboration in critical areas, including diplomacy, economy, trade, and security, ensuring sustained dialogue between Africa’s two largest economies.
