England’s Nations League Squad Revealed: Kelly Left Out, James & Toone Return, Stanway Faces Injury Setback
Chloe Kelly, who netted England’s winning goal in the Euro 2022 final, has been left out of the squad for the upcoming Women’s Nations League fixtures against Portugal and Spain. The 27-year-old forward, recently transferred to Arsenal from Manchester City, has yet to make her debut for her new club, following a period of limited playtime at City.
Manager Sarina Wiegman explained that Kelly must earn her place by getting more minutes on the field with Arsenal before being considered for the national team.
“She hasn’t played enough,”
Wiegman said, adding that the Chloe Kelly’s situation would be revisited once she starts playing more regularly.
Return of Key Players: James and Toone Rejoin, Stanway Out with Injury
In positive news for England, Lauren James and Ella Toone make their return to the squad after recovering from injury. James, who has been sidelined since April, and Toone, who has been in excellent form since her return to Manchester United, will bolster England’s attack.
However, Bayern Munich’s Georgia Stanway will miss out due to a knee injury. Despite this setback, Wiegman remains optimistic that Stanway will recover in time to play in Euro 2025.
Nikita Parris Earns Call-Up After Impressive WSL Start
Brighton’s Nikita Parris, who has scored four goals in 11 Women’s Super League matches this season, makes her first appearance in the senior squad since November 2022.
England’s Nations League journey begins on 21 February against Portugal, before a high-profile clash with Spain at Wembley on 26 February, a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final.
