Meta Terminates 20 Employees Over Confidentiality Breach Amid Political Shift Toward Trump
Meta Platforms, Inc. announced on Thursday that it has dismissed 20 employees for leaking confidential information to the media, as the company navigates the political landscape shaped by CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s relationship with former President Donald Trump. The decision comes amid growing scrutiny of Zuckerberg’s increasing alignment with Trump and the Republican Party.
A spokesperson for Meta confirmed the layoffs, noting, “We inform our employees upon joining and provide ongoing reminders that leaking internal information violates company policy, regardless of intention.” This statement followed an article published by The Verge, which first reported the terminations. The spokesperson reiterated that the company takes these breaches seriously and anticipates further actions against misconduct.
The firings appear to be a direct response to a series of reports based on Zuckerberg’s discussions with staff. During one of these meetings, Zuckerberg expressed frustration about the transparency of communication within the organization, stating, “We try to be really open, and then everything I say leaks. It sucks.” He cautioned employees to “buckle up” for the upcoming year and indicated that Meta aims to be a constructive partner to the Biden administration.
In light of the recent political changes, numerous tech leaders, including Zuckerberg, have pivoted towards Trump since the latter’s electoral victory in November. The Meta CEO has increased his outreach to Trump, particularly following the former president’s threats against him last summer after Meta suspended Trump’s Facebook account for encouraging the January 6 Capitol riot.
Zuckerberg’s engagement with Trump has included multiple dinners, financial contributions to Trump’s inauguration fund, relaxed content moderation policies, and the termination of Facebook’s US fact-checking program, reflecting a desire to be in closer alignment with the Republican leadership. The CEO has also replaced his top political affairs executive with a well-known Republican figure and appointed Trump supporter Dana White to Meta’s board of directors.
These strategic moves resonate with conservative ideologies and appeal to masculine influencers, such as Elon Musk. In a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Zuckerberg lamented that “a lot of the corporate world is pretty culturally neutered,” asserting that embracing a more masculine energy can be beneficial.
