Tragedy struck on Saturday night when an articulated truck lost control and rammed into vehicles and passersby near the Imo State University (IMSU) junction in Owerri.
The incident resulted in the deaths of six people, including a lecturer from the university.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred around 7 p.m. when the truck, driving against traffic, collided with commuter buses traveling from Owerri to the Owerri-Okigwe lane. The force of the collision left several victims in critical condition.
Chidiebube Okeoma, a journalist who witnessed the accident, played a crucial role in transporting the injured to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri. Okeoma recounted that initial attempts to seek help at nearby hospitals were unsuccessful due to the absence of medical personnel, necessitating the transfer to FMC.
“One person died on the spot, while medical personnel at FMC confirmed the deaths of five others,” Okeoma said. He identified one of the deceased as Dr. Nicholas Isinwa, a lecturer from IMSU’s Department of Marketing, who hailed from Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area.
Dr. Isinwa’s brother, Okpor Dominic, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic and untimely loss. The incident has sparked calls for the state government to address the recurring issue of auto crashes at the IMSU junction.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the fatalities and noted that the injured are receiving treatment at FMC Owerri. The community is urged to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
