Pandemonium broke out on Wednesday at the Cross River State House of Assembly after the impeachment of Speaker Elvert Ekom Ayambem.

The impeachment, driven by allegations of misappropriation of funds, was supported by 17 members of the House.

The motion to impeach Ayambem was introduced by Hon. Effiom Ekarika, the representative for Calabar South 1 Constituency, and seconded by Hon. Omang Charles Omang, who represents Bekwarra State Constituency.

Ayambem, who was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023, represents Ikom 2 State Constituency.

The situation escalated when a video posted by Channels TV on X captured Hon. Effiom Ekarika physically assaulting another member of the House.

The altercation occurred as the other member attempted to take the mace following the motion for impeachment. Ekarika was seen hitting the member with his elbow, leading to chaos in the Assembly.

Amidst the commotion, lawmakers who supported the impeachment were seen singing the national anthem and celebrating. The scene highlighted the deep divisions within the Assembly following Ayambem’s ousting.
