Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George has refuted claims made by Victor Osimhen in a viral video, where the striker denied faking an injury to avoid participating in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Osimhen had accused Finidi George of saying he wouldn’t beg him to play for the Super Eagles, which Finidi has categorically denied.
According to Nigerian sports journalist Colin Udoh, senior NFF officials confirmed that Finidi never accused Osimhen of feigning an injury. Finidi himself also denied making such statements, expecting Osimhen to handle the situation differently.
Finidi clarified that he would not beg any player to play for the Super Eagles, but did not mention Osimhen specifically. He also confirmed calling Osimhen from Germany to excuse him from the team.
Finidi expressed disappointment in Osimhen’s public outburst, stating that he should have reached out to him directly to clarify the matter instead of going public with “disrespect”.
The controversy has been put to rest, with Finidi’s clarification and confirmation from NFF officials.
Finidi George, who was recently appointed head coach of the Super Eagles, resigned from his position yesterday. The 53-year-old was appointed just last month, but his tenure was marked by a dismal start, with the team earning only one point from their first two World Cup qualifiers.
