In a successful joint operation, the Nigerian Embassy in Dakar and a Senegalese NGO, “Free the Slaves” (La Lumiere in French), have rescued 24 Nigerian girls and women from sexual exploitation in Senegal.
The victims, aged between 11 and 24, were trafficked from Nigeria through Benin Republic and Mali to Senegal for prostitution. Most of the girls were school dropouts from Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, and Plateau states.
According to the acting Ambassador, Salihu Abubakar, 22 of the victims were repatriated weeks ago, while the remaining two returned to Nigeria on Saturday.
The embassy and the NGO have been working together to combat human trafficking, with a focus on preventing the trafficking of Nigerian girls for prostitution.
This successful Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the trafficking ring and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
