NJC Recommends Kekere-Ekun as Next CJN, 27 Others for State Court Judges

If approved, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become Nigeria’s second female Chief Justice, following in the footsteps of Justice Mariam Mukhtar, who served as CJN from July 2012 to November 2014.

Abuja, Nigeria – The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

This decision was reached during the NJC’s 106th meeting, presided over by the current CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, in Abuja. The recommendation has been forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for approval.

The NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, announced the decision, noting that Justice Ariwoola will retire from his position on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

If approved, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become Nigeria’s second female Chief Justice, following in the footsteps of Justice Mariam Mukhtar, who served as CJN from July 2012 to November 2014.

In addition to recommending Kekere-Ekun, the NJC also proposed 27 candidates for appointment as judges of various state high courts. These recommendations have been forwarded to the respective state governors and the president for approval. The NJC also recommended one candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The newly recommended judges are expected to be sworn in after the necessary approvals. Below is a list of the recommended candidates:

High Court of Kwara State (6 Judges):

  • Olawoyin, Ibijoke Olabisi
  • Abdulrazaq, Fatimah Funsho
  • Folorunsho, Oba Muritala
  • Dikko, Yusuf Adebayo
  • Adeniyi, Oluwatosin Adenike
  • Osuolale-Ajayi, Temitope Olalekan


High Court of Kaduna State (1 Judge):

  • Zubairu, Murtala Ja’afaru


High Court of Benue State (4 Judges):

  • Kor, Vincent Tersoo
  • Ikwulono, Maigida Maimuna
  • Adagba, Nguhemen Julie
  • Tor, Damian Tersugh
  • Onche, Ogah Inalegwu
  • Igba, Theophilus Terhile


High Court of Rivers State (8 Judges):

  • Onyiri, Frank
  • Ugoji, Victor Chinedum
  • Obomanu, Godswill Vidal
  • Oguguo, Rita Chituru
  • Fubara, Alatuwo Elkanah
  • Kokpan, Bariyima Sylvester
  • Obu, Ibietela Innocent Madighi
  • Wifa-Adedipe, Lesi


High Court of Ondo State (6 Judges):

  • Daomi, Williams Adebisi
  • Fabuluje, Adewumi William
  • Ogunwumiju, Mobayonle Idowu
  • Demehin-Ogunbayo, Inumidun Happiness
  • Kpemi, Ojufisintei Justinah
  • Adegoroye, Olufunke Adeola


Sharia Court of Appeal, FCT Abuja (1 Kadi):

  • Muhammad, Lawal Munir

Customary Court of Appeal, Benue State (2 Judges)

  • Onche, Ogah Inalegwu
  • Igba, Theophilus Terhile

All recommended candidates will be sworn in after receiving the necessary approvals from the president and their respective state governors.
