Abuja, Nigeria — Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has cautioned that Nigeria is at risk of devolving into a one-party state under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He made the remarks while discussing the ongoing tensions between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking on the current political dynamics during an appearance on Politics Today (yesterday) Sowunmi stressed the need for timely intervention to preserve the country’s democratic ethos and prevent political instability.
“With due respect, the APC needs to reflect on whether it is functioning as a genuine political party, even though it is in government,” he said. Sowunmi further argued that unresolved internal conflicts like the one in Rivers State could potentially disrupt Nigeria’s democratic structure.
Addressing the feud between Governor Fubara and Wike, Sowunmi called for swift mediation to prevent further escalation. “There is a risk of this democracy morphing into a one-party state if the necessary mediation isn’t applied to the Wike-Fubara feud,” he said.
The politician also criticized the APC’s approach to party management, noting its lack of internal democratic processes. “The PDP has just conducted congresses all over the country. I can’t recall when our rivals, the APC, even mentioned anything about such a thing. We’re striving to uphold the principles of democracy,” he stated.
He accused the APC of acting more as a “special-purpose vehicle for contesting elections” rather than a legitimate political party. “It would be laughable for them to see how one person wakes up in the morning, throws away the chairman, and they conduct a congress. Someone emerges, and then the next day, they order that the election be redone,”
