Tripoli, Libya – The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has strongly criticized Nigeria’s decision to withdraw from the scheduled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, expressing its intention to pursue legal action to defend the interests of its national team.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles withdrew from the match, originally set for Tuesday, October 15, citing security concerns after being stranded at Al Abaq Airport for over 13 hours following an unanticipated flight diversion on Sunday.

In a statement shared by The Libya Observer, the LFF condemned the actions of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), accusing it of failing to cooperate in organizing the match.

“The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday, October 15,” the statement said. “It will take all legal measures to preserve the interests of the country’s national football team.”

The LFF also accused the NFF of poor collaboration throughout the qualification process, stating that Nigeria’s actions were far less severe than what the Libyan team experienced during the first leg.

The federation further apologized to the country’s football fans for the confusion and delays, attributing the disruption to the NFF’s behavior. “The Libyan Football Federation apologizes to Libyan football fans everywhere and to the parties concerned with the match arrangements due to the state of confusion caused by the Nigerian Football Federation, which led to the match not being held on time,” the statement concluded.
