Ilyas Usman Makes History as First Igbo Imam of Abuja National Mosque, Igniting Celebration Among Southeast Muslims
In a groundbreaking appointment, Professor Ilyas Usman, the first Igbo to achieve professorship in Arabic studies, has been named an Imam of the Abuja National Mosque. His appointment marks a historic first, as he becomes the only Igbo scholar to hold such a prestigious position at Nigeria’s central place of Islamic worship.
Prof. Usman is set to deliver his inaugural khutbah (sermon) today, Friday, October 18, 2024, alongside his two fellow Imams, Professors Ibrahim Makari and Muhammad Kabir. The appointment has been warmly received across the country, especially within the Southeast Muslim community.
Prof. Usman will join the two active Imams in conducting Jum’ah (Friday prayers) and daily congregational prayers at the 25,000-capacity National Mosque. His inclusion follows the absence of the fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura from the southwest, who has been on extended sick leave.
In another notable shift, today’s Friday khutbah will include short lectures in Nigeria’s three major languages—Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo—reflecting a commitment to linguistic inclusivity.
A Milestone for Southeast Muslims
The appointment has sparked jubilation among Southeast Muslims, with many viewing it as a recognition of Prof. Usman’s exceptional scholarly contributions and a nod to the region’s growing Islamic presence. The South East Muslims Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON) congratulated him, calling the role a divine blessing and a testament to his dedication.
In a statement signed by SEMON’s Acting National Chairman, Dr. Suleiman Afikpo, and Executive Secretary, Ustaz Sirajuddeen Ugwu, the group praised the leadership of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) for fostering inclusivity under its President-General, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
“We are proud of this historic achievement,” SEMON’s statement read. “It not only highlights the contribution of the Igbo Muslim community but also showcases the inclusiveness of Islamic leadership in Nigeria.”
The organization also prayed for wisdom and strength for Prof. Usman as he embarks on this sacred responsibility.
