Cairo, Egypt – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially awarded Nigeria three points and three goals after Libya forfeited their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match, which was abandoned due to alleged poor treatment of the Nigerian team.
The CAF Disciplinary Board investigated the events surrounding the October 15 game in Benghazi, where Nigeria’s Super Eagles were reportedly left stranded at an abandoned airport for nearly 24 hours.
The findings concluded that Libya had violated several CAF regulations, including Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
The CAF ruling includes the following key points:
- Libya’s Football Federation was found in breach of Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
- Match No. 87 between Libya and Nigeria, scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi, has been declared a 3-0 forfeit victory in favor of Nigeria.
- Libya’s Football Federation has been fined $50,000.
- The fine must be paid within 60 days of the ruling.
- All other appeals or motions for relief were dismissed.
- CAF President Patrice Motsepe reiterated that CAF is committed to ensuring sportsmanship and fairness in African football.
As a result of this decision, Nigeria now leads their group with ten points from four games, boosting their chances of securing a place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
