Mrs. Ekweremadu, alongside her husband and Dr. Obinna Obeta, was convicted by a UK court in May 2023 for organ trafficking. The case marked the first conviction under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.

Senator Ekweremadu received a 10-year prison sentence, while Beatrice was sentenced to six years, despite citing health challenges during the trial. The couple, along with Dr. Obeta, was found guilty of attempting to illegally procure a kidney from a young Nigerian donor for their ailing daughter, Sophia.

Global Pleas for mercy Ignored

The sentencing came despite pleas for mercy from notable figures and institutions, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the National Assembly, and the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC).
