Abuja, Nigeria – The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in five appeals related to the crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly concerning the defection of 27 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The apex court, after hearing arguments on the matter, announced that a judgment date would be communicated to all parties involved.
One of the key issues before the court is the legality of Martin Amaewhule’s position as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Governor Siminalayi Fubara is contesting Amaewhule’s legitimacy, arguing that his defection, along with 26 other lawmakers, disqualifies him from holding the position.
At a previous sitting, the Supreme Court Nullifies Fubara’s 2024 Budget Passed by Four Lawmakersrt, led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, dismissed an appeal filed by Governor Fubara regarding the re-presentation of the 2024 state budget before the Assembly under Amaewhule’s leadership. The appeal was withdrawn by Fubara’s counsel, Yusuf Ali, who stated that the matter had become irrelevant.
The court’s decision on the defection case is highly anticipated, as it could have significant political implications for governance in Rivers State.
