The new rate, which reflects a 50% jump from the previous N4 charge, comes after the Federal Government approved a hike in telecommunications tariffs. As a result, banks have started notifying their customers about the updated fees.

One such notification from Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) titled “Increase in SMS Transaction Alert Fee” informed customers that the new rate would take effect from Thursday, May 1, 2025. The bank explained that the adjustment was necessary due to the recently implemented changes by telecom operators.

“Dear Valued Customer, please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1, 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from N4 to N6 per message,” the email stated. “This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers.”

GTBank also emphasized the importance of SMS alerts, noting that they help customers monitor and manage their account activities in real time. Customers who wish to opt out of SMS alerts can update their preferences via the bank’s official website by completing a transaction alert form.

The bank further clarified that SMS alerts sent to international phone numbers would attract higher charges, in line with global telecom pricing.

This move by banks follows the rising cost of telecom services, which has begun to impact various sectors reliant on mobile communication to reach and update customers.
