British rap superstar Stormzy, known for his groundbreaking contributions to grime and UK rap, has been banned from driving for nine months and fined £2,010.
The ruling was made by Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on January 2, 2025, after he pleaded guilty to using a mobile phone while driving his Rolls-Royce Wraith in West Kensington, London.
The offense occurred on March 7, 2024, when an off-duty police officer spotted Stormzy using his mobile phone behind the wheel. The officer also noted that the vehicle’s window tints allowed only 4% light transmission, far below the UK’s legal limit of 70%. He reportedly instructed Stormzy to “get rid of your tints and get off your phone.”
The court heard that Stormzy’s driving record already included six penalty points from earlier offenses. District Judge Andrew Sweet described the rapper’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible,” adding another six penalty points for the latest violation. The accumulation of 12 points resulted in an automatic driving disqualification under UK law.
His lawyer stated that the rapper accepted full responsibility for his actions and expressed deep remorse. However, this was not his first caution; he had been previously warned about driving with illegal tints in October 2023. The court emphasized the risks such behavior poses to other road users, raising concerns about accountability among high-profile individuals.
