Mpox is an illness caused by the monkeypox virus, which spreads primarily through close contact with an infected person. It can also spread via contaminated surfaces and objects.
The Rivers State Government has confirmed two cases of the Mpox infection, a potentially deadly disease caused by the monkeypox virus.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, during a news conference held on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Oreh stated that the state’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre has been placed on high alert to respond to any further outbreaks.
“Recently, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reported 39 confirmed cases of Mpox across the country. Out of these, Rivers State accounts for two confirmed cases,” Dr. Oreh said.
In response, the state government has activated an incident plan for Mpox and has mobilized resources to track and manage all reported cases across the state.
Medical teams have been deployed to general and specialist hospitals to handle emergencies, and ad hoc staff have been trained and engaged to monitor and effectively combat the infection.
“The ad hoc staff now have the capacity to respond to this infection at all levels of our healthcare system,” Dr. Oreh added.
