Anambra State Government Imposes Ban on Mobile Phones in Secondary Schools

The Anambra State Government has declared a ban on the usage of mobile phones by secondary school students throughout the state. This announcement was made by the Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration held on Friday in Awka.

Prof. Ikediugwu instructed school principals and teachers to confiscate any mobile devices brought to school by students, explaining that the initiative aims to reduce distractions and improve academic performance among learners.

She emphasized the need to uphold discipline and maintain focus within educational settings, highlighting the disruptive nature of mobile phone usage during school hours. “I am empowering principals and teachers to take possession of phones from students who bring them to school so that we can ensure they concentrate on their academic pursuits without phone-related distractions,” she stated.

Further, she noted that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo is heavily investing in education to foster academic excellence and discipline amongst students.

In her address, Prof. Ikediugwu also celebrated the rich heritage of Igbo culture, urging the importance of cherishing and promoting its unique traditions. “Igbo culture is not solely about attire and dance; it symbolizes values such as honesty, diligence, respect for elders, and other commendable traits. It is crucial that we continuously impart the values and norms of Ndigbo to our students to safeguard the legacy of the Igbo people,” she concluded.
