A Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged top executives of the cryptocurrency exchange platform Binance, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, of tax evasion charges brought by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The court’s decision came after Binance appointed a Nigerian representative, Ayodele Omotilewa, leading the FIRS to file fresh amended charges.
Gambaryan and Anjarwalla were accused of tax evasion and released on Friday, with the case adjourned till July 12 for plea.
The development comes amid increased scrutiny of cryptocurrency activities in Nigeria, with Binance facing separate prosecutions for alleged foreign exchange violations and money laundering.
Earlier, 16 US lawmakers petitioned President Biden to secure Gambaryan’s release, citing wrongful detention by the Nigerian government.
