PDP Claims Tinubu’s Government is Financing APC’s Election Manipulation Efforts in Edo State, APC Denies Allegations
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of releasing N3.2 billion ($2 million) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to influence the upcoming Edo governorship election.
According to Edo PDP Chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, the funds are intended for vote buying, including compromising Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, security operatives, and voters. The Edo governorship election is scheduled for September 21.
Key candidates include Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the APC, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP). The PDP alleges that the APC’s candidate, Okpebholo, was handed the money with directives on how to disburse it for the election.
The PDP further claims the Presidency has instructed security agencies to disrupt voting in PDP strongholds, particularly areas aligned with Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki and the party’s candidate, Ighodalo.
However, the APC has dismissed the allegations. Nze Chidi Duru, the party’s National Deputy Organising Secretary, said the PDP’s accusations are baseless, hinting that the opposition might be reflecting on its own past misconduct during elections.
The PDP urged President Tinubu to ensure a free and fair election in Edo, emphasizing that keeping the state peaceful is his primary responsibility.
