Kaduna, Nigeria – A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Rabiu Yusuf to 16 weeks imprisonment for stealing two iPhones valued at N678,000.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, delivered the ruling on Tuesday, stating that Yusuf failed to provide a reasonable explanation for his actions. Emmanuel warned the convict to refrain from any future criminal activity, noting that more severe penalties would follow if he reoffends.
Yusuf, a resident of Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna, was charged with criminal conspiracy and theft. He pleaded guilty to both charges.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the theft occurred on September 13 at a shop in Kurmin Marshi, Kaduna, owned by Zainab Salisu. Yusuf, along with two accomplices who are still at large, entered the shop under the guise of purchasing clothing materials and stole the two iPhones, which were left to charge.
The theft was later confirmed through CCTV footage, which identified Yusuf as the culprit. The stolen phones were traced back to Yusuf’s residence, leading to his arrest.
Inspector Leo added that the offence violated the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
