Abuja, Nigeria – A native doctor, identified as Ismail Usman, sustained severe injuries after a self-inflicted gunshot wound while testing a ‘bullet-proof’ charm in Kuchibiyi, a community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Thursday when Usman attempted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the charm by shooting himself in the stomach using a locally made firearm. The charm, which he claimed would render him immune to bullets, failed, leaving him critically injured.

Samson Ayuba, a resident of the community, said, “He tried to test the charm after wearing it. Unfortunately, it didn’t work, and he collapsed immediately after shooting himself.” Neighbors quickly transported Usman to the Kubwa General Hospital for emergency care.

The spokeswoman for the FCT Police Command, SP Adeh Josephine, confirmed the incident. She stated that police officers from the Byazhin Division responded promptly and found Usman in critical condition. He was later transferred to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada for further treatment.

During a search of the native doctor’s residence, the police recovered a homemade gun and various charms. Investigations are ongoing, and the victim faces potential charges for unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, condemned the incident and warned against the dangers of illegal firearms and reckless practices. “This situation illustrates the serious risks of engaging in dangerous and illegal behaviour. We strongly advise community members to refrain from such activities,” he said.
