The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently conducted a targeted raid on drug sellers operating in the Apapa area of Lagos and its environs.
The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate spearheaded the operation, which resulted in the apprehension of numerous hawkers and the confiscation of a wide range of illicit drugs.
The raid, which took place in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, was part of NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of unauthorized pharmaceuticals in the market. According to a statement released by the agency on Friday, the operation yielded significant results, with illicit drugs worth approximately N50 million seized during the raid.
Among the confiscated drugs were aphrodisiacs, narcotic substances such as tramadol, antibiotics, and over-the-counter medications. The seizure underscores the grave concern posed by the illicit trade in pharmaceuticals, which not only undermines public health but also fuels drug abuse and addiction across the country.
Speaking on the success of the operation, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain. She reiterated NAFDAC’s zero-tolerance stance towards the distribution and sale of unapproved drugs, emphasizing the need for stringent enforcement measures to deter illegal drug activities.
“The raid on drug hawkers in Apapa and its environs is a clear demonstration of NAFDAC’s resolve to root out the menace of unauthorized pharmaceuticals,” Dr. Adeyeye stated. “We will not relent in our efforts to clamp down on drug peddlers and unscrupulous individuals who put the health and safety of Nigerians at risk.”
The individuals apprehended during the raid will face prosecution in accordance with the law, with NAFDAC vowing to pursue justice and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. Additionally, the confiscated drugs are slated for destruction to prevent them from re-entering the market and posing a threat to public health.
In recent years, Nigeria has grappled with the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard drugs, posing significant challenges to public health and safety. NAFDAC’s proactive measures, including targeted raids and intensified surveillance, are aimed at stemming the tide of illicit drug activities and safeguarding the well-being of Nigerians.
As part of its mandate, NAFDAC continues to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies, regulatory bodies, and healthcare professionals, to combat the illicit drug trade and ensure access to safe and quality medicines for all Nigerians. The agency urges members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drug activities to the appropriate authorities, emphasizing the collective responsibility in safeguarding public health.
