The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the successful rescue of six children from the clutches of kidnappers.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, it was revealed that the police apprehended the leader of a notorious kidnap syndicate specializing in the abduction of young children from their families in the state.
The operation stemmed from a report made by Nkwuda Francis on January 21, 2024, stating that a woman posing as a youth corps member, identified as Mercy Francis, had kidnapped two children from his residence in Nwezenyi Igbeagu, Izzi LGA of Ebonyi State.
Following a thorough investigation by officers from the Gender Unit of the Command, the suspect was traced to Oba, Anambra State, where the abducted children, aged three and seven, were rescued and reunited with their family.
Further inquiries led to the discovery of Mrs. Lovina Iwuorah and Mrs. Ndifereke Wisdom Clement, whose children had been abducted in Ohaozara LGA of the State.
These mothers identified the suspect as an accomplice in the disappearance of their three children, aged between one and three years old.
The investigation extended to Benin City, where the children were found in an orphanage. The proprietor of the orphanage has been detained and is cooperating with the authorities.
The suspect’s modus operandi involved renting an apartment, gaining the trust of neighbors, and then abducting children for financial gain. The Command urges property owners and caretakers to conduct thorough background checks on potential tenants.
Parents are also advised to educate their children about safety and interactions with strangers to prevent such incidents in the future.
