Delhi, India – Indian police have apprehended three Nigerian nationals accused of running an elaborate online scam that defrauded a local woman of ₹2.62 lakh (approximately N4.9 million).

The suspects, identified as Lezhu John, Gibril Mohammed, and Egboola Ekena, were arrested on Friday following an extensive investigation into their fraudulent activities.

Authorities revealed that the trio is part of a larger cybercrime network operating across multiple states. The group is said to have purchased over 500 bank accounts, using them to transfer and siphon money obtained through online scams. Many of these accounts were reportedly created using either genuine or forged documents.

According to M.M. Rajput, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cybercrime), the suspects had overstayed their visas in India and turned to cyber fraud to generate quick income. “We discovered that the gang possessed details of over 500 bank accounts, which they claimed to have purchased from another group,” said a cybercrime official.

Investigators also uncovered hundreds of photographs of men and women stored on the suspects’ mobile phones. These images were allegedly used to create fake social media profiles to target unsuspecting victims.

The gang’s activities came to light after a young woman filed a complaint at the Cybercrime Police Station, stating that she had been defrauded of ₹2.62 lakh. Police used intelligence inputs and tracked bank transactions to trace the suspects to Delhi.

Further investigations revealed that the gang moved large sums of money between the accounts to mask their illegal activities. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the groups that provided the suspects with bank account details.
