Samsung Electronics has announced the sudden passing of its co-CEO Han Jong-Hee due to cardiac arrest on Tuesday. He was 63 years old. A spokesperson for the South Korean technology giant confirmed the news.
Han, born in 1962, had been a pivotal figure at Samsung, overseeing the company’s consumer electronics and mobile device segments since assuming the role of co-CEO and vice chairman in 2022. His fellow co-CEO, Jun Young-Hyun, currently leads Samsung’s semiconductor division.
In a heartfelt message shared internally, Samsung paid tribute to Han, noting his 37 years of service that helped transform Samsung’s television division into a global frontrunner. During his tenure as head of electronics and home appliances, he played a significant role in steering the company through difficult market conditions. The message expressed condolences for Han’s family and loved ones during this challenging time.
As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding who will succeed Han in his leadership role, according to the spokesperson.
Recently, during an annual investor meeting he chaired last week, Han expressed regret over the company’s stock performance and warned of a challenging year ahead in 2025 due to uncertainties in the economic policies of major nations. He mentioned that Samsung would aim for “meaningful” mergers and acquisitions in 2023 to bolster growth.
Han acknowledged the complexities involved in semiconductor mergers and acquisitions, citing regulatory hurdles and differing national interests but reaffirmed the company’s commitment to achieving concrete results this year.
Having joined Samsung in 1988 after graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Inha University, Han previously led the company’s display operations before his elevation to oversee electronics and devices.
Samsung and its community mourn the loss of an influential leader as they navigate future challenges without his guidance.
