Sokoto, Nigeria – Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved a monthly maintenance allowance of N200,000 for secondary school principals across the state.

The initiative is set to begin in January 2025 and aims to address immediate maintenance needs in schools.

The announcement was made during the State’s 2025 citizens’ budget discussion held on Monday. Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Chief Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, stated that the allowance would support school principals in carrying out minor repairs, including services provided by carpenters, masons, and other artisans.

“This approval is in line with the governor’s commitment to improving the maintenance and functionality of secondary schools across all 23 local government areas,” Bawa said.

The decision followed an appeal by the former Deputy Governor, Chiso Abdullahi, who emphasized the importance of providing principals with funds to address urgent repairs.

In addition to the school maintenance fund, Governor Aliyu directed the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Dadi Adare, to review the allowances of traditional rulers in the state. This directive came after the District Head of Kilgori, Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, representing the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, requested an upward revision to align with current economic realities.
