First Medical Graduates Inducted from Rivers State University Amid Calls for Ethical Practice
Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has officially inducted the first cohort of 48 medical graduates from the Rivers State University (RSU), a milestone celebrated during a ceremony at the university’s College of Medical Sciences. Vice Chancellor Prof. Nlerum Okogbule lauded the event as a significant achievement for both the institution and the newly qualified doctors.
During the induction ceremony, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ovy Chukwuma, urged the new doctors to adhere to professional ethics and emphasize the importance of giving back to their communities. He pledged to revitalize neglected health projects within the state to better serve the populace.
Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of innovation and leadership, stating, “You are called to be innovators and problem solvers. Tackle the specific healthcare challenges in your communities and contribute to the enhancement of our healthcare framework. Use your expertise to uplift others, advocate for health equity, and strive to improve our world. Congratulations on making us proud.”
Dr. Fatima Kyari, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the MDCN, reminded the inductees that their journey as medical doctors was just beginning. She framed the medical profession as a calling rather than a business, highlighting the accomplishment of RSU in producing these first graduates as a remarkable achievement.
Dr. Kyari noted, “Your group represents trailblazers, setting a standard for future cohorts. Remember that the healthcare landscape is constantly changing and you will encounter challenges that will test your determination and creativity. Embrace these challenges and see them as opportunities for growth and advocacy for your patients.”
After the induction and the administration of the medical oath, Dr. Kyari welcomed the new doctors into the profession and assured them that the council would facilitate their registration once they submit their signed oath documents.
Emphasizing the significance of the housemanship phase in their careers, she encouraged them to dedicate themselves fully during this critical period. “Congratulations to the pioneering medical graduates of Rivers State University as you embark on this noble path,” she concluded.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor Prof. Okogbule recognized the event as historic, reiterating the sentiment of Dr. Kyari in praising the graduates as pacesetters. He commended their dedication and perseverance in successfully completing the rigorous medical curriculum within six years without any delays.
The ceremony culminated with the recognition of exceptional academic achievements, highlighted by the presentation of awards to the top graduates across various medical disciplines, including the overall best graduating student.
