Gov Alex Otti To Extend Nurses' Retirement Age to 65 In Abia

Umuahia, Abia – August 9, 2024 –

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced plans to extend the retirement age for nurses from 60 to 65 years.

The announcement was made during his monthly interactive session with the media at the Government House in Umuahia.

Otti stated that this extension is part of the state’s initiative to enhance the healthcare sector, which is a key focus of his administration.

The government had previously raised the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years.

In addition to the retirement age change, the governor revealed that the state is set to establish a state-of-the-art medical city. A committee has been formed, and the location for the project has been identified.

The state will collaborate with the Extended Hands and Lifted Hands international medical missions to bring this project to fruition. Otti emphasized that the goal is to attract medical tourists to Abia.

The governor also noted that his administration has managed to operate without borrowing funds so far, though they are considering offers from the African Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank Group for future needs. He assured that the state’s financial health is stable.
