The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received assurance from the United States government that the delivery dates for the AH-1Z attack helicopters ordered by the Federal Government remain on track. This was disclosed during a Programme Management Review meeting held at the NAF headquarters, which brought together officials from the NAF, US government, and Bell Textron Company.
According to Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde, Chief of Policy and Plans, who represented the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the meeting aimed to review the progress made so far in the manufacture of the aircraft, ensure a smooth transition, and provide technical guidance to the NAF.
The meeting also discussed the impending delivery of the AH-1Z attack helicopters, which will significantly boost Nigeria’s close air support and ground attack capabilities. The induction of these helicopters into the NAF Order of Battle will undoubtedly enhance its firepower and operational capabilities, particularly in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.
The US Government AH-1Z Programme Management Office team leader, Kevin Stone, commended the collaboration between the NAF and US military, saying it is a testament to their shared commitment to regional stability, peace, and security. He emphasized that the successful implementation of PMR will have a significant impact on Nigeria’s ability to tackle security challenges and ensure the safety of its citizens.
ReportAfrique had previously reported purchase of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters and other arms by Nigeria from the US Department of Defence in December. The helicopters were expected to be ready in June 2024. With this assurance from the US government, Nigeria can now look forward to receiving these vital assets to enhance its air power capabilities.
The collaboration between Nigeria and the US demonstrates their strong partnership in enhancing Nigeria’s air power capabilities and addressing regional security challenges. The timely delivery of these attack helicopters will undoubtedly contribute to Nigeria’s efforts to tackle security threats and protect its citizens.
