FCCPC says Abuja Chinese supermarket sells products in yen

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has intervened regarding the Chinese supermarket situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce on Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road in the Federal Capital Territory

The supermarket, which garnered attention for its alleged discriminatory policy of only allowing Chinese nationals entry, faced scrutiny from the FCCPC.

The owner, Liu Bei, accompanied by family members and estate officials, appeared before a tribunal at the FCCPC headquarters in Asokoro on Wednesday at 11 am to address the allegations of discrimination.

Earlier on Monday, the FCCPC had sealed the supermarket and issued a summons notice to Bei after widespread condemnation of the discriminatory policy on social media platforms.

In response to the accusations, Bei refuted claims of catering exclusively to a particular group, stating that her store served residents, workers, and visitors from the office building, regardless of nationality.

Following discussions and the submission of necessary documents, the estate assistant facility manager, Sanusi Shuaibu, confirmed that the issues had been resolved, and the FCCPC officials subsequently unsealed the grocery store. Shuaibu stated that the store was now open, with all questions addressed and products in compliance.

A representative from the FCCPC confirmed the owner’s attendance at the meeting, suggesting that enforcement officers may have subsequently removed the seals from the establishment.
